ORD 95-34 SALARIES OF MAYOR & CITY COUNCILORDINANCE NO. 95-34
AN ORDINANCE of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington,
establishing the salaries of the Mayor and the City Council
members; providing for an increase in the salary of the City
Council members, effective January 1, 1998; and providing for
automatic yearly increases in the salaries of the Mayor and the
City Council members that are 90 percent of the annual increase
in the consumer price index, commencing January 1, 1999.
WHEREAS, by Ordinance No. 93-24, the salary of the Mayor was established at
$2,500.00 per month; and
WHEREAS, by Ordinance No. 93-31, the salary of the City Council members was
established at $300.00 per month; and
WHEREAS, the duties and responsibilities of the Mayor and City Council members have
become more demanding and time consuming; and
WHEREAS, increasing the salary of the City Council members effective January 1,
1998, will more appropriately recognize the time and effort contributed by the City Council
members in the performance of their responsibilities and duties; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to authorize yearly salary increases for the Mayor
and City Council members, commencing January 1, 1999, that are tied to the annual increase
in the all urban consumer price index, in order to recognize future time and effort to be
contributed by the Mayor and City Council members in the performance of their duties and
responsibilities; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WASHINGTON,
DO ORDAIN as follows:
Section 1. The salary of City Council members shall be $300.00 per month. As of
January 1, 1998, the salary for City Council members shall be $400.00 per month, until
increased in accordance with Section 3, of this ordinance.
Section 2. The salary o the Mayor shall be $2,500.00 per month, until increased in
accordance with Section 3, of this ordinance.
Section 3. On January 1, 1999, and on every January 1, thereafter, the salaries for the
Mayor and City Council members shall be increased by 90 percent of the most recently
calculated annual increase in the all urban consumer price index for the Seattle/Tacoma area.
Section 4. All previous salary increases for the Mayor and City Council members are
ratified and confirmed.
Section 5. The increases in salary for the City Council members authorized by this
ordinance shall not be applicable during the present term of any City Council member voting
on this ordinance.
Section 6. Ordinance No. 93-24 (relating to the Mayor's salary) and Ordinance No. 93-
31 (relating to the City Council members' salary) are repealed.
Section 7. This Ordinance shall be effective five days from and after its passage,
approval and publication as required by law.
