91-23 MULTI-ETHNIC AND MULTI-CULTURAL DIVIERSITY COMMITTMENTRESO IO A RESOLUTION of the City of Winslow, Washington, reaffirming the City's commitment to multi-ethnic and multi-cultural diversity; opposing malicious harassment in the City; and authorizing the Mayor to appoint a Committee Against Malicious Harassment. WHEREAS, the City of Winslow is a community of many diverse cultures and ethnic groups; and WHEREAS, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic diversity in the City has enriched the lives of its residents; and WHEREAS, throughout its history, the City has supported and pursued justice and equality for all persons, regardless of color, national origin or religious creed; and WHEREAS, the City has opposed discrimination, racism and prejudice, as well as racial hatred and dissemination of racist documents in any form; and WHEREAS, there has been an alarming increase in malicious harassment in the United States, in the Northwest and in the Puget Sound region; and WHEREAS, recent distribution of hate literature in the City and the surrounding area underscores the need for vigorous opposition by the entire community to racial, ethnic and religious hatred; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and the City Council desire to appoint a committee to address and consider malicious harassment in the City; now, therefore, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WINSLOW, WASHINGTON, DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The Mayor is requested to appoint a Committee Against Malicious Harassment comprised of citizen representatives. The Committee shall seek the cooperation of appropriate groups within the community; hold a public meeting sponsored by the City to address the problem of malicious harassment and explore methods for eliminating it; and prepare and submit to the Mayor and City Council a report of its findings and recommendations. adt/cab/1540R -- 1 -- Section 2. The City encourages all segments of the community, including schools, churches, social service agencies and community groups, to actively oppose and speak out against racism, prejudice, discrimination and malicious harassment, and to join with the Committee Against Malicious Harassment to coordinate their efforts.
