PROCLAMATION
A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND,
WASHINGTON, DECLARING THE MONTH OF MAY AS ASIAN
AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH.
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, is pleased
to join in the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, the latest U. S. census shows that Asian Pacific Americans
make up the fastest growing minority group in the country and one_Of~tbe
largest ethnic groups in the area; and
WHEREAS, in one sense, however, it would be wrong to perceive
Asian Pacific Americans as a single group. The term Asian Pacific American
spans the spectrum from Arabic to Indian to Southeast Asian to Korean to
Japanese to South Pacific Islanders--each group having its own distinct
culture and heritage; and
WHEREAS, to borrow a phrase from the Seattle International
Examiner, Asian Pacific Americans are "one community -- many voices"; and
WHEREAS, the diversity of the Country's various ethnic groups is at
the core of American fabric and is what makes us unique and distinct among
the countries of the world and when we explore the rich cultural background
of others, we learn more about ourselves.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WASHINGTON
Section 1. We join in the celebration of Asian Pacific American
Heritage month and salute the contributions made by Asian Pacific Americans
to our community.
