WHEREAS, it is an obligation of the Department of
Emergency Management to educate the citizens of Kitsap County on
preparedness and response for all emergencies; and
WHEREAS, earthquakes are among the most devastating of
natural disasters; and
WHEREAS, Kitsap County and the State of Washington are
highly susceptible to earthquakes, which can cause serious damage,
injuries and death; and
WHEREAS, these losses can be greatly reduced if people
prepare for earthquakes and take protective measures during and
immediately following an earthquake; and
WHEREAS, public interest in earthquake preparedness has
greatly increased after the recent devastating earthquakes in Soviet
Armenia and California; and
WHEREAS, it is important to work toward reducing our
vulnerability before the next earthquake to protect ourselves and
those we are responsible for.
NOW, THEREFORE, Sam J. Granato, Mayor of the City of
Bainbridge Island, State of Washington, does hereby proclaim April
26 - May 2, 1992, as
EARTHQUAKE AWARF_aNESS WEEK
in the City of Bainbridge Island and urges all citizens of
Bainbridge Island to learn more about how to prepare for this
destructive hazard.
