RES 94-02 DR MARTIN LUTHER KING OBSERVANCERESOLUTION NO. 94-02
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND,
WASHINGTON, ENCOURAGING OBSERVANCE OF THE DR.
MARTIN LUTHER KING FEDERAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATED
ON JANUARY 17, 1994.
WHEREAS, the theme of this year's celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. federal holiday is "Living the Dream. Let Freedom Ring."; and
WHEREAS, the King Holiday Commission created to oversee observance of the
holiday has also created a sub-theme for the holiday entitled "Stop the Killing. Start the Healing
and Building ".; and
WHEREAS, the Commission hopes to inspire young people to embrace
alternatives to violence for settling disputes, conflicts and to reject those influences that destroy
rather than sustain life; and
WHEREAS, the Commission hopes all Americans will observe the holiday and
encourages community service that will help to alleviate hunger, homelesshess, illiteracy, drug
sale and use, gangs, crime and all types of violence thus fostering the non-violence
teachings employed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; now, therefore,
THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE
ISLAND, WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE to encourage the Citizens of Bainbridge Island to
comply with the wishes of the King Holiday Commission by observing the holiday and urges
churches and institutions to fly the American flag and to ring their bells at 12 noon EST on
January 17, 1994, proclaiming the day one of peace, civil unity and non-violence.
