RES 95-36 SUPPORT OF REGIONAL EFFORTS TO KEEP THE USS MISSOURI IN KITSAP COUNTYRESOLUTION NO. 95-3
A RESOLUTION of the Bainbridge Island City Council
supporting the regional efforts to keep the USS Missouri
in Kitsap County.
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri is the battleship that served
distinguished duty in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the
Gulf War and was the site of the World War II formal surrender of
the Japanese Empire to the Allied Forces in. Tokyo Bay, September 2,
1945, thus ending one of the bloodiest wars in history; and
WHEREAS, during the 30 years the USS Missouri was moored
in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard thousands of visitors and tourists
from the United States and throughout the world visited this proud
battleship; and
WHEREAS, the residents of the Puget Sound area played a
pivotal role in the production of war materials and the housing and
training of personnel for all military services; and
WHEREAS, the Bainbridge Island military radio base had a
significant role in breaking the Japanese military communications
code at the commencement of World War II; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island has historical
naval roots dating back to Commodore William Bainbridge, a naval
hero of the War of 1812; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes the City of Bremerton
and the surrounding Puget sound communities can sustain necessary
amenities to meet world wide visitor and tourist interests; and
WHEREAS, the City Council does not believe the permanent
location of the USS Missouri should be decided by a financial
bidding proposition amongst competing'communities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council, in
passing this resolution, supports the efforts to keep the USS
Missouri at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
