RES 97-22 PERMANENT MOORAGE OF THE BATTLESHIP USS MISSOURI ON THE MAINLAND CITY OF
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND
RESOLUTION NO. 97-22
A RESOLUTION of the City of Bainbridge
Island, ;Vashington, supporting the proposal of the
Missouri on the Mainland Committee to permanently
moor the Missouri on the mainland.
WHEREAS, the Battleship USS Missouri, (BB63) is the solitary
identifiable symbol of the end of World War II, for the multitudes of
servicemen and women, who served during that period and the millions of
home front defense workers; and
WI-IEREAS, this intrinsic historical vessel is presently moored on the
mainland of the contiguous state of the 'union, where the majority of
veterans and home front defense workers and their descendants 'reside,
affording them the opportunity to visit and to perpetuate the significance of
the events conducted aboard this vessel, ending the most important event of
the 20th century; and
;VHEREAS, more citizens of this country will be able to view this
national treasure, especially the youth, the future leaders of this republic,
of the immense purchase price of freedom for all mankind, that it may long
endure if moored on the mainland; and
WHERE., the Missouri on the Mainland Committee (MOM) has
been duly organized and proposes that the Battleship USS Missouri (BB63)
be moored at a suitable location on the mainland to provide accessibility for
the majority of the American public to savor a taste of Freedom and their
heritage.
NOW~ THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED~ by the City Council of the
City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, that we support the action and
proposal of Missouri on the Mainland (MOM) Committee to permanently
moor the Missouri on the mainland.
