RES 2000-20 OPPOSITION TO A TRANPORTATION CORRIDOR BETWEEN BAINBRIDGE AND CK TO SEATTLERESOLUTION NO. 2000-20
A RESOLUTION of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, declaring the
City of Bainbridge Island's determination and resolve to oppose all present and
future attempts to establish a transportation corridor through Bainbridge Island
linking Central Kitsap to Seattle.
WHEREAS, the non-profit organization West Sound Connection -Link was
formed to promote a transportation corridor through Bainbridge Island linking Central
Kitsap to Seattle; and
WHEREAS, the concept includes a bridge between East Bremerton and
Bainbridge Island, a limited access highway across South Bainbridge, and a new regional
ferry terminal at Blakely Harbor; and
WHEREAS, the concept would involve the relocation of hundreds of families in
Illahee and Bainbridge Island, the condemnation of over many millions of dollars worth
of property, the industrial development of the recently preserved Blakely Harbor Park,
and have tremendous environmental and social consequences; and
WHEREAS, the proposed route would have serious and potentially catastrophic
consequences in environmentally sensitive areas, geologically hazardous areas, public
parks, and an environmental learning center; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bainbridge Island currently accepts a disproportionate
share of cross -sound traffic; and
WHEREAS, the economic benefits to the Central Kitsap region from this project
do not begin to outweigh its considerable costs; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge will continue to work closely with Bremerton
and Kitsap County to achieve ferry parity and shared economic prosperity for the region;
and
WHEREAS the non-profit organization West Sound Connection -Link has asked
the City of Bainbridge Island for its opinion of this project; and
WHEREAS, there is little or no public or political support for a transportation
facility such as LINKS proposes; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BAINBRIDGE ISLAND CITY COUNCIL that the
City of Bainbridge Island strongly opposes any attempt to establish a bridge between
Central Kitsap and Bainbridge Island, a ferry terminal at Blakely Harbor, and any type of
highway connecting the two.
