RES 97-33 SUPPORT OF PASSENGER ONLY FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN KINGSTON AND SEATTLERESOLUTION NO. 97-33 A RESOLUTION of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, in support of passenger only ferry services between Kingston, Washington, and Seattle, Washington. WHEREAS, effective passenger ferry service that achieves parity in service for all West Sound passenger terminals is a vital aspect of transporting increasing numbers of people across Puget Sound; and WHEREAS, initiation of a passenger-only ferry route between Kingston and Seatfie would be an important step toward parity of ferry service for the West Sound ferry terminals in Kitsap County, with positive long term economic benefits throughout the region; and WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island has a continuing interest in achieving timely, efficient, and reliable passenger ferry service connecting closely to commuter' origin; and WHEREAS, increasing passenger traffic has taxed the passenger-carrying capacity of ferries assigned to the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route during commuter hours; and WHEREAS, many ferry passengers using the Bainbridge Island-Seattle run come from north Kitsap county including Kingston; and WHEREAS, a recent survey by the Washington State ferry system (see Pacific Rim Resources: Report of September 10, 1997) showed that a significant portion of the ferry users of the Bainbridge Island- Seattle run (25%) and the Kingston-Edmonds run (41%) would "Very likelf' use a passenger only ferry route between Kingston and Seattle; and WHEREAS, the Kingston Chamber of Commerce and citizens of the greater Kingston area have shown tangible support and enthusiasm for a passenger-only ferry route between Kingston and Seattle through sponsorship of the Kingston Passenger Ferry Demonstration Day on September 27, 1997. NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WASHINGTON DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: 1. We commend the Kingston Chamber of Commerce sponsorship of the Kingston Passenger Ferry Demonstration Day. 2. We support continuing efforts to establish passenger-only ferry service between Kingston and Seattle. 3. We will work together with Kingston and other West Sound communities, the Washington State DOT and other relevant agencies to achieve parity of ferry service throughout the region.
