RES 2008-10 BRING YOUR BAGS DAYRESOLUTION NO. 2008-10
A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Bainbridge
%MW Island, Washington, recognizing April 19, 2008 as `Bring Your Bags
Day" on Bainbridge Island.
WHEREAS, each year, twelve million barrels of oil are required to produce the 100 billion
plastic bags, and thirty-five million trees are cut down to produce the 25 billion paper bags used
in the United States each year; and'
WHEREAS, in the United States, the EPA estimates that only one percent of plastic bags and 20
percent of paper bags in the United States are recycled, and
WHEREAS, the indiscriminate littering of plastic bags is an increasing blight problem. Plastic
bags create significant litter problems for U S streets, beaches, and the marine environment; and
WHEREAS, over 1 million seabirds, 100,000 marine animals, and countless fish die annually
through ingestion of and entanglement in marine debris, including plastic bags3, and
WHEREAS, each year, retailers spend an estimated $4 billion on their plastic store bags,
passing the costs on to consumers, and 4
WHEREAS, the County of Kitsap has set solid waste reduction and recycling goals, and
WHEREAS, reusable bags contribute towards environmental sustainability over single -use
plastic and paper carryout bags, and
WHEREAS, Sustainable Bainbridge, the Chamber of Commerce and its community partners are
urging shoppers to forego single -use plastic and paper bags in favor of reusable tote bags to
recognize `Bring Your Bags Day", and
WHEREAS, various Earth Day events will occur around the island on April 19, 2008, now
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE
