A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Bainbridge Island,
Washington, relating to the Bainbridge Saving Energy Together campaign.
WHEREAS, the City Council of Bainbridge Island recognizes that global climate
change and the value of conserving scarce energy resources are not only international
issues but are also profoundly local issues; 2nd
WHEREASP many cities throughout the nation, both large and small, are
reducing globalarminng pollutants through programs that provide economic and quality
of life Benefits such as reduced energy bills, green space preservation, air quality
improvements, reduced traffic congestions, improved public transportation choices, and
economic development and job creation through energy conservation and new energy
technologies; and
WHEREAS, this City Council in its Resolution 2002-07 reaffirmed its
commitment to the goals and principles found in the proclamation of Earth ]day by the
Mayor, and adopted goals such as the following:
1. Inviting and encouraging all citizens, businesses, organizations, schools., clubs,
congregations, neighborhoods, and families to engage in environmentally sound
practices every day; and
2. Encouraging partnerships between and among businesses, environmental
organizations, schools, and the artist community to help raise community
awareness, and
. Co -sponsoring community activities and providing support through City
departments; and
. Demonstrating leadership through participation; and
. Using such activities as a springboard for exploring new avenues to
sustainability; and
6. Continually evaluating City operations, facilities, services, and purchasing to
ensure the highest standard of environmental protection; and
'. Forging partnerships with local organizations, environmental professionals,
businesses and citizens to accelerate the adoption of Island -wide sustainability
practices -and becoming a model for the region; and
WHEREAS, on April 29, 2005 the hair on behalf of the City of Bainbridge
Island has signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which, as amended at
the 73rd Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting, commits the City to meet or exceed
Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by taping actions in City
operations and in the wider community; ; and
WHEREAS, on July 18, 2005, resolution leo. 2005-28 was passed by the City
Council reaffirming its commitment to the conservation of natural resources, the
utilization of -renewable energy technology,, nd the related goals of the comprehensive
plan, , including support and sponsorship by the City of community education activities
and events such as the Bainbridge Island Solar outreach Forums; and
WHEREAS, while recognizing. the need for national leadership to respond to
global climate change and seely conservation of scarce energy resources, the City of
Bainbridge Island wishes to tale a step that will help respond to the rids posed by global
climate change; while providing education to Bainbridge Island residents about
opportunities to save on energy costs and conserve electrical and heating energy in their
homes and businesses; and
WHEREAS, Sustainable Bainbridge, a local nonprofit organization, wishes to
join with local residents, organizations, City government, and local businesses to initiate
the Bainbridge Saving Energy Together (SET) campaign; and
WHEREAS, the Bainbridge Saving Energy Together campaign will ---- through
education, outreach and collaboration with local businesses — help Bainbridge citizens
implement energy efficiency improvements in their hones and lives, and will measure
these energy savings at the community level and empower people to feel a part of
community effort to fight global warming; now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL CIL of THE CITY of BAINBRIDGE ISLAND,
WASHI1 IGTONo DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
The City of Bainbridge Island hereby officially endorses the Bainbridge Saving
Energy Together campaign.
