RES 2013-18 RENAMING STRAWBERRY PLANT PROPERTYRESOLUTION NO. 201348
A RESOLUTION of the City Council of Bainbridge Island,
Washington, relating to the re- naming of the property known
as Strawberry Plant Property.
WHEREAS, in 1950, John Nelson, a shipyard worker and Island resident, deeded
his property at 692 Highway 305 in his will to the Town of Winslow for the purpose of
establishing a park to be known as the John Nelson Park (the "John Nelson Property ");
and
WHEREAS, due to constraints with the location, the John Nelson Property was
not opened as a public park; and
WHEREAS, in 2004, the City of Bainbridge Island, with the consent of Eric
Lund, the heir of John Nelson, entered into an agreement with Island Seniors Community
to exchange the John Nelson Property for the property currently known as Strawberry
Plant Property located on Eagle Harbor at the foot of Weaver Road (the "Exchange
Agreement "); and
WHEREAS, in accordance with the Exchange Agreement, a portion of the John
Nelson Property has been retained for park purposes and a trail named the "John Nelson
Trail" is being developed; and
WHEREAS, in order to further honor the gift of John Nelson and the actions of
his heir, Eric Lund, in assisting with the acquisition of Strawberry Plant Property, the
City would like to re -name Strawberry Plant Property; now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND DOES
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS,
Section 1. The property known as Strawberry Plant Property is hereby re -named
"John Nelson Park at Strawberry Cannery Cove" in honor of the memory of John Nelson
and his heir who made the acquisition possible.
