ORD 99-35 ESTABLISHING SALARIES FOR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERSORDINANCE NO. 99-35 AN ORDINANCE of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Establishing the salary for City Councilmembers effective January 1,2000; amending Section I and Section 3 of Ordinance No. 95-34. WHEREAS, by Ordinance No. 95-34, the salary of the City Council members was established at $400.00 per month, as of January 11 1998, with annual increases based on 90 percent of the most recently calculated annual increase in the all urban consumer price index for the Seattle-Tacoma area; and WHEREAS, under Ordinance No. 95-34, the salary of City Council members in 1999 is $412.00 per month while the average of 1999 salaries for the eleven comparable cities used for employee salary comparisons is $480.00 per month; and WHEREAS, although the duties and responsibilities of the City Council members are demanding and time consuming, City Council member salaries are intended as partial compensation for community service but are not intended to provide full compensation for the time spent; now, therefore, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 1 of Ordinance No. 95-34 is amended as follows: The salary of the City Council shall be $600.00 per month beginning in 2002 provided that on January I, 2003, and on every January 1 thereafter, the salary for the City Council members shall be increased by 90 percent of the most recently calculated annual increase in the all urban consumer price index for the Seattle/Tacoma area. Section 2. Section 3 of Ordinance No. 95-34 is amended as follows: On January 1, 1999 and on every January 1 thereafter the salary for the Mayor shall be increased by 90 percent of the most recently calculated annual increase in the all-urban consumer price index for the Seattle/Tacoma area. Section 3. The increase in salary for the City Council members authorized by this ordinance shall not be applicable during the present term of any City Council member voting on this ordinance. Section 4. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force on January 1, 2000, which date is more than five days from and after its passage. approval, and publication as required by law.
