A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WINSLOW,
~!~SHINGTON, PRCCLAIMING NOVEMBER 1988 AS NATIONAL HOSPICE
MONTH AND RECOGNIZING THE WORK OF THE LOCAL HOSPICE IN
PFDVIDING CARE FOR THE ~T.T.y TTI. ~ THR. TR FAMTT,IES.
WHEREAS hospice care has ~n demonstrated to be a humanitarian way
for temminally-ill patients to approach the end of their lives in relative
comfort with appropriate, ccmpetent, and c~t'~assionate care in an environment
of personal individual ity and dignity; and
WHEREAS the hospice concept advocates care of the patient and family
by attending to their physical, emotional, social a~ spiritual nccds; and
WHEREAS hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of
physicians, nurses, social workers, phnrmacists, psychological and spiritual
counselors, and cum~nity volunteers trained in the hospice concept of care; and
WHEREAS hospice care is proving to be an effective and economical
alternative to unnecessary institutionalization for many terminally-ill people; and
WHEREAS hospice care is rapidly beccming a full partner in the nation's
health care delivery system; and
WHEREAS the enactment of a hospice benefit under Medicare, which became
effective November 1, 1983, makes it possible for many more elderly Americans
to have the opportunity to elect to receive hospice care; and
WHEREAS there r~ains a great need to increase public awareness of the
benefits of hospice care:
NOW ~F2REFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Winslow officially recognizes
November 1988 as National Hospice MOnth and acknowledges the work of
HOSPICE OF KITSAP COUNTY as a viable cc~pcnent of the health care system
in the City of Winslow, Washington.
