RES 89-27 OPPOSITION TO REDUCTIONS IN CROSS SOUND FERRY SERVICERESOLUTION NO. 89-27
A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WINSLOW,
WASHINGTON, EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO PIANNED RIDUCTIONS
IN CROSS-SOUND FEE SERVICE BY THE ~IASHINGTON STATE
DEP~ OF TRANSPORTATION.
WHEREAS, the Washington State Depa~hLe/nt of Transportation has operated
existing cross-sound passenger ferry service with the M.V. Express/Tyee over the
past few years within existing tax revenue, and
WHEREAS, several months ago, the Washington State Depart~]~_nt of
Transportation ordered two additional passenger ferries and announced plans
to operate them. The purchase of the boats were not contingent on tax
increases, and
WHEREAS, the Washington State Department of Transportation recently
announced plans to discontinue passenger ferry service with the Express/Tyee,
and to cc~nence service with the two new boats, and
WHEREAS, the announced reason for lack of service is the failure of
the state legislature to enact new taxes.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WINSLOW,
~ASHINGTON, RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Washington State Department of Transportation has beech
operating the Express/Tyee within existing tax revenue for the past few years,
and could continue to do so if they chose to make passenger ferry service a
high priority.
Section 2. The Washington State Deparh~ent of Transportation ordered
two new passenger ferries and could operate them within existing tax revenue,
if they chose to make passenger ferry service a high priority.
Section 3. The decision to allocate existing tax revenue to transportation
systems and projects other than cross-sound ferries reflects Deparh,'ent of
Transportation priorities.
Section 4. The Winslow City Council strongly Opposes any reduction
in the level of existing or planned cross-sound passenger ferry service and
urges the Washington State Department of Transportation to make cross-sound
passenger ferry service a high priority.
