RES 2000-17 EVALUATION OF "PET STORE PROPERTY" AS FUTURE SITE OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUMRESOLUTION NO. 2000-17
A RESOLUTION of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington,
proposing that the Bainbridge Island Historical Society evaluate
the property known as the "Pet Store Property" for feasibility as
a future long term -site of the Historical Society Museum.
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island recognizes the historical background
of Bainbridge Island as an important cultural element that should be nurtured and
preserved for future generations, and
WHEREAS, the Bainbridge Island Historical Society has established a museum
containing an outstanding collection of local historical memorabilia that represent the
island's varied culture, and
WHEREAS, the Bainbridge Island Historical Society's museum is located in a
relatively remote location because the society has been unable to locate a suitable site
within the general area of the downtown, and
WHEREAS, greater visibility and convenient access to the museum are factors
calling for immediate attention in order to insure that the community may maximize
widespread enjoyment of the current and future cultural resources of the museum, and
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island owns property known as "Pet Store
Property", which abuts the site of City Hall and the BPA, which property has been
considered as potentially available for use by non-profit cultural entities such as the
Bainbridge Island Historical Society,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Bainbridge Island urges the Bainbridge Island Historical Society to evaluate the Pet Store
Property for its feasibility as a future long-term site of the museum; and requests that the
society respond within a period of six months regarding the feasibility of such usage.
Furthermore, be it resolved that, should feasibility be established, the Council shall enter
negotiations for a long-term lease of the property by the Bainbridge Island Historical
Society, subject to all state and local laws regarding the lease of real property owned by
the city.
