RES 2016-24 ESTABLISHING A HIRING INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR THE BIPDRESOLUTION NO. 2016-24
A RESOLUTION of the City Council of Bainbridge Island,
Washington, regarding the establishment of a hiring incentive
program for the Bainbridge Island Police Department.
WHEREAS, there is a recognized local, state, and national shortage of qualified
police officer candidates; and
WHEREAS, the Bainbridge Island Police Department has experienced a shortage
of qualified police officer candidates and the City of Bainbridge Island desires to have
more options available in its efforts to recruit and hire lateral police officer candidates;
now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND DOES
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The City Council strongly supports the Bainbridge Island Police
Department's recruitment efforts and recognizes that there is a need to broaden the
options available to the Police Department to recruit and hire highly qualified officers.
Section 2. The City Council hereby establishes a hiring incentive program for the
Bainbridge Island Police Department through which the City has the option of providing
newly hired lateral police officers with a hiring incentive of five thousand dollars
($5,000), consisting of two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) payable upon hire, and
the remainder payable upon completion of a 12 -month probationary period, provided that
an officer receiving this incentive payment shall fully refund the City for the payment if
that officer voluntarily separates from employment with the Bainbridge Island Police
Department within three (3) years from the date of hire with the City.
Section 3. The City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager with the option
of utilizing this incentive program when deemed necessary.
