RES 2003-19 NON-TOXIC HERBICIDES USE BY WSDOTRESOLUTION NO. 2003-19
A RESOLUTION of the City Council of Bainbridge Island, Washington
requesting that the Washington State Department of Transportation maintain state
highways without the use of toxic herbicides.
WHEREAS, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) uses
over 75,000 pounds of hazardous herbicides to control vegetation along state highways
each year; and
WHEREAS, WSDOT may spray the herbicides broadly, sometimes up to 50 feet
from the edge of roads; and
WHEREAS, the chemicals found in these herbicides have been linked to a long
list of human health and environmental problems, including: cancer, endocrine
disruption, reproductive and developmental problems, inflammation of respiratory
ailments, contamination of waterways, and impacts to endangered salmon; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island has successfully maintained roadsides
without herbicides since 1996.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Bainbridge
Island, Washington hereby respectfully requests that the Washington State Department of
Transportation implement plans to reduce herbicide use along all state roadways and use
only mechanical and non-toxic methods of vegetation removal along State Highway 305.
