RES 2005-17 MILLER ROAD 35-MPH SPEED LIMITRESOLUTION 2005-17
A RESOLUTION of the City of Bainbridge Island,
Washington, setting a maximum speed limit of 35 -MPH on
Miller Road from Day Road to New Brooklyn Road.
WHEREAS, City Council members and City Staff received numerous requests in
the past few years from citizens to reduce the speed limit along all or portions of Miller
Road; and
WHEREAS, Miller Road is a secondary arterial that serves as a major north -south
connector on the Island with a speed limit of 40 MPH, except a portion north of New
Brooklyn Road that has a speed limit of 35 MPH; and
WHEREAS, the City Engineer initiated an independent engineering study of the
existing condition and safety on portions of Miller Road in accordance with the standards
outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); and
WHEREAS, the independent study report entitled "Miller Road NE Corridor
Safety Study, NE Battle Point Drive NE to NE Bay Hill Road" was completed on January
12, 2005 and did not support an overall reduction in the existing speed limit; and
WHEREAS, the City Engineer in a memo dated February 10, 2005 to the City
Council Public Works and Transportation Committee provided a copy of the study and
the recommendations from the study to be immediately implemented including a
reduction of the existing speed limits from Tolo Road to New Brooklyn Road; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to establish a maximum speed limit of 35 -
MPH on the entire length of Miller Road.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Bainbridge
Island, Washington:
Section 1. In accordance with the Washington Model Traffic Ordinance, Chapter
308-300 adopted by BIMC 10.04.010, the City Council establishes a maximum speed
Ili -nit on Miller Road of 35 MPH.

Section 2. Upon passage of this Resolution, Public Works will install 35 MPH
speed limit signs in accordance with the MUTCD.
