RES 2003-51 INITIATING STEWARDSHIP & ACTIVE USE OF CITY OWNED AG LANDRESOLUTION NO. 2003-51 A RESOLUTION of the City Council of Bainbridge Island, Washington Initiating the stewardship and active use of City owned agricultural land. WHEREAS, the City of Bainbridge Island has adopted agricultural goals and policies, as part of the Land Use Element of the Comprehensive Plan, to protect and preserve the island's agricultural heritage and to promote agricultural land use as an economically viable activity; and WHEREAS, the City did pass a bond in 2001 to fund purchase of agricultural land; and WHEREAS, the City now owns 44.2 acres of agricultural land; and , WHEREAS, the City did support the formation of The Trust for Working Landscapes (TWL), a non-profit entity, with a community based board of directors and board of advisors, whose purpose, in part, is to: "...restore and preserve the economic diversity and rural heritage of Bainbridge Island by protecting farming ... and demonstrating sustainable land stewardship techniques and practices ". BE IT RESOLVED: Section 1. The City will contract with The Trust for Working Landscapes to maintain and manage the active use of the Morales property for growing crops or other related agricultural activities and to develop a Stewardship Plan to serve as a model for the current and future use of City owned agricultural lands; and ,0 Section 2. The Stewardship Plans for City owned agricultural properties shall focus on active use of the land for the production of crops and related activities, shall promote economic vitality for fanners, shall, implement environmental best management practices and shall provide a public benefit; and Section 3. The City contract with the Trust for Working Landscapes to develop a stewardship plan for the management of the Morales property shall serve as a pilot project and shall be managed by the City Administrator; an& Resolution No. 2003-51 (Farm Management) \ November 25, 2003 City Council Meeting Section 4. The Trust for Working Landscapes will act as an agent to provide for input from both the farming community and the community at large on issues related to the stewardship of City owned agricultural land.
