PROCLAMATION
A PROCLAMATION by the City Council of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, declaring November
13-19, 2022, as 'Transgender Awareness Week" and November 20, 2022, as the "Transgender Day of
Remembrance."
WHEREAS, our nation was founded upon the declaration that all people are created equal; that life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are among the inalienable rights of every person; and that each
person shall be accorded the equal protection of the law; and
WHEREAS, one of the guiding principles of the City of Bainbridge Island is to foster the diversity of the
residents of the Island; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 1.4 million transgender, gender nonconforming people in the United
States, but only about 16% of Americans say they personally know someone who is transgender, while
approximately 87% of Americans say they personally know someone who is gay or lesbian; and
WHEREAS, transgender, gender nonconforming people in the City of Bainbridge Island are our children,
friends, family members and neighbors and are valued and important members of our community; and
WHEREAS, Transgender Awareness Week is a time for transgender, gender nonconforming people and
their allies to take action and bring attention to their community by educating the public and advancing
advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that transgender people face; and
WHEREAS, Transgender Awareness Week is the prelude to the Transgender Day of Remembrance on
November 20, 2022; and
WHEREAS, on Sunday, November 20, 2022, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, together with
Bainbridge Pride, Rainbow Crew Northwest, The Bainbridge Island -North Kitsap Interfaith Council, Queer
Elders Family Group, Transfriending, and the greater Kitsap Trans Community, will hold a public panel
discussion at 4:00 p.m. on holding simultaneous feelings of gratitude and sorrow for lives lost but not
forgotten; and
WHEREAS, a number of Bainbridge Island churches and temples have joined in the Transgender Day of
Remembrance: Gratitude and Sorrow to bring awareness of the Transgender Day of Remembrance into
their regular service groups so that Trans and Non -binary youth know their churches see and accept
them.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Joe Deets, Mayor of the City of Bainbridge }sland, on behalf of the City Council, do
hereby proclaim November 13-19, 2022, as Transgender Awareness Week and November 20, 2022, as
the Transgender Day of Remembrance in the City of Bainbridge Island and encourage all residents to
celebrate the progress within our culture toward justice, equality, and full civic recognition for
transgender, gender nonconforming persons and to join them in the fights that remain to be won.
